FAQ

What are "Modern Cloth Pocket Diapers"?

'Cloth Pocket Diapers' have only been around since 1998 and are fast becoming one of the most popular choices in cloth-diapering. They consist of a two-piece system, a waterproof outer layer (usually made of PUL) and a stay-dry inner layer (usually made of Suede Cloth or Milled Fleece) that has the ability to wick wetness away from the baby’s skin. They have a contoured shape and are fastened with Aplix / Velcro tabs (hook and loop closures) or snaps. At the back (or sometimes at the front), they have a pocket opening that allows you to insert absorbent materials such as microfibre or hemp.

The advantage of a pocket diaper is that you are able to customize the amount of absorbency according to your baby's needs.  They also dry very quickly since the inserts are removed prior to washing.

What are "Inserts"?

'Inserts' are absorbent multi-layer fabrics that are placed inside pocket diapers. These can be made from various materials such as microfibre, terry, hemp or bamboo.

A piece of Microfibre Insert can last for about 2-3 hours (for average young baby).  Simply stuff two inserts inside the pocket for stronger absorbency.

Hemp Insert is great for heavy wetter.  Example, for toddler aged 2 1/2, 1 piece of Microfibre  Insert + 2 pieces of Hemp Inserts can last her for one whole night, from around 9pm till 9am ~ Baby's skin still stay dry and cool.!!  *Note : microfibre insert (with faster absorbency) to be placed at the top layer and hemp insert (with the capability to absorb more  liquid but not absorbing as fast as the Microfibre Inserts - fast absorbency is needed to avoid leakage) to be placed at the bottom layer.

Would my child feel warm in cloth diapers?

Moo Moo Kow TM Cloth Diapers uses breathable PUL, which is not warm for your child.

Are cloth diapers bulky?

Cloth diapers are a little bulkier than disposable diapers, yet not noticeable most of the time.  They are bulkiest when you need to stuff extra inserts during night-time and for heavy-wetters.

How many cloth diapers do I need to get?

The number of pieces needed depends on whether your baby would be using cloth diapers full-time, baby's age, and how often you wish to do laundry.

Based on daily washing, it is recommended that you start with 8 to 12 pieces.

Could my child use both cloth and disposable diapers?

Absolutely!  Some mothers choose to use cloth diapers at home and disposable for outings and night time. Of course, the less disposable diapers your child uses, the more money you save, the healthier for baby's skin, and the better for the environment.  What is most important is the diapering system that works best for your baby and your family.

Is washing cloth diapers simple?

Yes, absolutely!  Please read the next page for details.

How do I remove poo from the cloth diapers?

It is easy to remove anything fairly solid from suede cloth, simply shake the solids into the toilet.  Then remove the insert and rinse away any remaining poo.  The mini toilet spray is very useful for spraying off solid waste.

Why is prewashing needed?

Prewashing the cloth diapers help them to attain good absorbency.  Ideally, they should be washed 3 times before initial use.

Why can't cloth diapers be washed with bleach and softener?

Bleach will leave a residue on the diapers and breaks down the fibres in them, thus shortening their lifespan.

Softener will coat the diapers, making them water-repellent and will result in leakage.

Do cloth diapers leak?

Both cloth and disposable diapers may leak.  By choosing the appropriate fit and absorbency, leakage would be minimised.

Do I need to change my baby more often if he/she is using cloth diapers?

Whether baby is using cloth or disposable diapers, you should change him/her every 2 to 3 hours to keep baby's skin healthy and to prevent diaper rash.

How does using cloth diapers prevent diaper rash?

When your baby is in cloth diapers, there is no harmful chemical in direct contact with his/her delicate skin, thus preventing diaper rash.

What are the different types of fabric used in cloth diapers?

Breathable-type PUL (polyurethane laminate)

Used in outer layer of pocket diapers.  It is a laminated polyester fabric which is waterproof and breathable. .

Suede Cloth

Used in inner layer of pocket diaper.  It does not pill and looks new wash after wash.  It has the ability to wick wetness away from your baby's skin and is also stain-resistant.  This keeps baby's skin dry and the diapers looking new.

Microfibre

Used in pocket inserts.  It absorbs fluids rapidly and provides great absorbency.

Hemp

Used in pocket inserts (usually mixed with cotton).  It is very absorbent, durable and has anti-bacterial properties.  After washing, it would shrink by about 10%.  The more it is washed, the more absorbent and softer it would get.  It is an excellent choice for heavy-wetter.
